Giving and Financial Support
You can financially support UUFA in many ways
Annual pledging, undesignated donations in the offering plate, and participating in various FUNdraising activities comprise the main ways you can support the mission, vision, and values of this Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. A few are outlined below.
ANNUAL PLEDGING: A Promise of Financial Support
Members and friends who wish to make a pledge for the 2021-2022 fiscal year, please go to the Annual Budget Drive page.
An effective religious or spiritual organization like the Fellowship exists only through the generosity of its members and friends. You help realize our shared mission and vision when you volunteer gifts of time, talent or treasure. UUFA can operate at the highest possible level only by knowing what financial resources it can expect over the course of the fiscal year. By allocating them wisely we will realize our stated mission and vision – to transform lives and make the world a more fair and just 'beloved community'.
A "pledge" is a financial promise to support the Fellowship during the program (fiscal) year, from July 1 through June 30. Your pledge should be based on your personal circumstances. No matter what amount you are able to give, please know every penny counts and every penny is gratefully received.
Contributions towards a pledge may be made online or by mail to 780 Timothy Rd., Athens, GA 30606. Emailing the Congregational Administrator (firstname.lastname@example.org) with any questions or concerns.
When should you make a pledge?
Typically, during February/March of each year, we hold an Annual Budget Drive when we ask current members and friends to evaluate their existing pledges and adjust them as their means allow or their commitment deepens. We ask all members to support the Fellowship at whatever level they are able to.
Newcomers may make a first pledge at any time. To make that first financial pledge for the months remaining in the current fiscal year (July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021), simply email that amount to UUFA's Congregational Administrator.
What is an appropriate pledge amount?
One guideline is to give a percentage of your net income. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) suggests your congregation receive between 2 to 10% of your net income, beginning at the lower end and increasing it as your commitment and means grow. Although we don't limit the amount you may donate to UUFA, these guidelines give you something concrete to consider as you determine what is best for you or your family.
This chart created by the UUA may offer some guidance for you:
Do you own stocks or other securities?
How are they doing? Do you think it might be time to lock in some profits by selling some of your winners? If you do, you will have to pay a Capital Gains tax of as much as 20% if you bought the security MORE than a year ago. If you want to reduce or even eliminate that tax, consider donating the appreciated stock or bonds to the Fellowship. If you do, you can generally eliminate the tax and take a deduction for the full current market value of the stock. Considering how much tax you save and what you invested in the first place, you could increase your pledge while spending much less than if you sold the stock and donated the proceeds. You can simply have your broker transfer the security to the Fellowship’s brokerage account. (NOTE: This special tax provision ONLY applies to stocks or other securities that you've owned MORE than one year.) Speak to UUFA's bookkeeper or Treasurer to receive the account number. Check with your tax preparer for details on your tax savings.
